Wrinkle Removal Q & A

What causes wrinkles?

The wrinkles and fine lines that form in your skin as you age are caused by a variety of coinciding factors, including natural changes, environmental factors, and the long-term effects of facial muscle use.

Natural changes: During the aging process, your skin loses some of its natural elasticity and becomes more fragile. At the same time, it’s affected by a decline in oil production that makes it drier than it was during your youth. These combined factors promote the formation of wrinkles.

Environmental factors: Long-term exposure to ultraviolet light promotes wrinkling, by breaking down the deep layers of connective tissue that help keep your skin flexible and strong. Smoking, which affects the oxygen-rich blood supply to your epidermis, is another controllable environmental factor that can lead to wrinkle formation.

Muscle use: Routine facial expressions, such as a signature smile or a chronically-furrowed brow, can break down skin tissue and eventually lead to the formation of wrinkles and deep creases, including crow’s feet, worry lines, and marionette lines.

Can I treat wrinkles?

Yes. There are a variety of treatment options designed to reduce or erase the appearance of wrinkles. Static wrinkles -- the lines and creases associated with genetics, sun exposure, and chemical exposure -- respond exceptionally well to laser skin resurfacing, a treatment that stimulates collagen production to help improve skin tone, texture, and elasticity.

Deeper lines and creases, such as those caused by routine facial expressions, can also be improved with laser skin resurfacing treatments, but may respond best to cosmetic injectables, such as Botox® or dermal fillers.

How does laser skin resurfacing work?

Laser skin resurfacing works by delivering precision light beams into the dermis of your skin to stimulate collagen growth and tighten underlying tissues. Dr. Kwolek uses the SmartSkin+™ laser technology. This state-of-the-art micro-ablative laser gently ablates, or removes, the uppermost layer of skin before sending rapid-pulse beams of energy deep into the dermis of your skin to promote collagen growth.

As the treated skin begins to heal and form new healthy tissue, you’ll see smoother, more youthful skin with fewer wrinkles and flaws. Laser skin resurfacing can even help reduce the appearance of large pores, age spots, scars, and other complexion irregularities.

How does Laser Genesis work to treat wrinkles?

Dr. Kwolek offers a non-invasive laser technology, called Laser Genesis. With this treatment, the wavelength heats up the dermis and stimulates collagen production. It creates more elasticity to the skin without any downtime. Multiple treatments are required.

What other treatments are available to remove wrinkles?

Depending on your aesthetic goals and skin, you may respond best to cosmetic injectables or fillers when it comes to removing wrinkles. Botox® and dermal fillers work well to reduce deep lines and creases from everyday facial expressions. Dr. Kwolek also provides chemical peels as another treatment to reduce wrinkles.

During your consultion, Dr. Kwolek will help you choose the appropriate wrinkle treatment.
